Hi everyone! Welcome back to my blog
This post contains spoiler for movie Coco.
Have you seen the movie, Coco? I watched it twice. It is one of my favorite movies! In the movie, the main character Miguel Rivera accidentally goes to the world of the dead. Miguel wanted to be a musician but his family didn't want him to be a musician and even didn't like him to sing or play the music.
One day, he found out that his father is his favorite singer, Ernesto de la Cruz. (He didn't know who his father is because of Miguel's father died when he was young and his mom doesn't like to talk about him). Since Miguel's grandmother broke his guitar because she got mad about Miguel doing music, he went memorial to borrow Ernesto's guitar. But in sudden, that guitar brought Miguel to the world of the dead.
As you can see in the picture, you can find out all are dead except Miguel. They are all skulls. So Miguel needed to paint his face to hide the secret that he is alive.
What Miguel put on his face was a makeup. To hide the secret. What I'm going to talk about are the actual masks that people used to hide or become another person.
mexico traditional masks When I was 7, my family and I went to the Latin America Museum. There are so many Latin culture based artworks. Among them, the one that attracted me was masks, Mexico traditional no name masks. As you can see, masks are not cute or gorgeous like masquerade masks. It's more like scary.
I was shocked when I saw masks because I had never seen scary masks. So I even couldn't sleep for a while after seeing the masks.
According to Octavia Paz, "Men are tempted to free from the given name or change given behind a mask and attempt to gain a new image." I didn't know that meaning at the time since I was too young, but just the masks gave me a big impression. That made me think like "Oh.. that artwork can catch not only their beautiful shape but fear or oppressive feelings because like I said, those masks are hard to say that they are beautiful but they definitely caught my eyes. I think this experience also leads me to become an artist now. It gave me more of a wide view of the world and people.
So this is a story about my impressive artwork. Do you have your favorite artwork that moved you? Tell me about your artwork!
Thank you for reading my post and see you next time!
